Clean, baseload power poised for liftoff

Next-generation geothermal projects have the economic and technical potential to provide hundreds of gigawatts of emissions-free baseload power to the grid. But despite strong consensus on the industry’s promise across the public and private sectors, geothermal faces challenges from financing gaps, inaccessible data, and procedural misalignments between the entities producing and buying geothermal energy—barriers that were identified in the DOE’s 2024 Geothermal Liftoff Report.

Combining the power of the public and private sectors

The Mountain West Geothermal Consortium develops interventions to overcome key barriers and convenes decision-makers—state governments, developers, investors, geothermal offtakers, and others—to socialize, refine, and implement them. Working alongside member states and corporate advisors, the Consortium co-designs and stress-tests potential interventions across three areas:

  • Financing: Building novel financing frameworks and shared risk mechanisms to crowd in early infrastructure investment

  • Offtake: Enabling electric utilities and other offtakers buy geothermal electrons

  • Data: Identifying, collecting, and disseminating the data needed to uncover new project sites in the region
